AU CŒUR DE PARIS (2026)

Original Soundtrack – Released 29 September 2026

Original score composed by Gabriele Croci
for the documentary Au Cœur de Paris, a film by Manuel de Teffé

Exploring the history of the Congregation of the Mission

Au Cœur de Paris is an original soundtrack composed for Manuel’s documentary, continuing a long-standing artistic collaboration that has developed through several projects over the years. Working closely together, we have developed a shared musical and cinematic language in which music is conceived not simply as accompaniment, but as an integral part of the narrative and emotional structure of the film.

The score grew from the atmosphere, characters and spiritual dimension of the documentary, combining recurring thematic material with a broader orchestral language shaped around the film’s unfolding journey. Some musical ideas developed in earlier collaborations have found new forms here, while new themes were conceived specifically for the people and places at the heart of the story. For me, Au Cœur de Paris represents another significant step in this artistic partnership, built on years of mutual trust, dialogue and a shared understanding of the relationship between image and music.

mary magdalene (2023)

Theatrical Soundtrack

Original music composed by Gabriele Croci
for the theatrical production Mary Magdalene.

Mary Magdalene – Story of a Conversion is an original theatrical soundtrack composed for the 2023 stage production, inspired by the life of Mary Magdalene and drawing on the Gospels and Maria Valtorta’s Poem of the Man-God. The score was conceived primarily to work alongside the spoken dialogue, often remaining in the background and supporting the dramatic flow rather than competing with it. This required a deliberately essential musical language and a process involving extensive revisions. A distinct musical theme was developed for nearly every significant character, creating a thematic network that shapes the architecture of the entire score. The recurrence and development of these character-related themes were intended to give the musical material a clear identity, allowing it to be recognized and associated with the characters and their dramatic journeys.

Signs and Wonders: Eucharistic Miracles (2021)

Original Documentary Soundtrack

Zeichen und Wunder – Eucharistische Wunder
Original Documentary Soundtrack

The score for Signs and Wonders – Eucharistic Miracles grew out of an inspiring artistic collaboration with filmmaker Francisco Kröger. Working closely with him on the documentary provided a stimulating creative environment and had a lasting influence on my approach to writing for film. The score is built around a central theme alongside several related musical ideas, some of which would later continue to evolve in my work on Au Cœur de Paris in 2026.

Alessandro Rolla: Serenatas for Violin & Viola (2010)

Historically informed recording with period instruments, bows and strings

Recorded in 2009, prior to post-production, with violist Valerio Losito, this recording explores Alessandro Rolla’s music through a historically informed approach, using period-appropriate tuning, strings and bows. The performers also composed cadenzas for selected fermatas, following the improvisatory practice of the repertoire. In Serenata Op. 14 No. 3, the performers switch instruments, with Gabriele Croci playing violin and Valerio Losito viola. Recorded in the Aula Magna of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome.

J. S. Bach: The Art of the Fugue BWV 1080 (2001)

Historically informed recording on period instruments

Autograph Version of the Berlin Manuscript Performed on Baroque Instruments

I recorded Bach’s The Art of the Fugue with the Bernini Quartet following a year of public performances of the work, which allowed us to develop and refine our approach before entering the recording studio. Among these performances was a concert at the Quirinale’s Cappella Paolina on 13 May 2001, broadcast live nationwide on Italian radio by Rai Radio 3 featuring three Contrapuncti. The project also involved a collaboration with composer Michelangelo Lupone, who developed an electronic version of selected Contrapuncti for string quartet and electronics.

The project was based on the autograph version of the Berlin Manuscript and on a historically informed approach to Bach’s instrumental practice, using historical instruments, gut strings and period-appropriate tuning. For me, this recording was an important formative experience in historically informed performance, and it became a foundation for many of my subsequent experiences in this field.

The recording was made at the Church of Sant’Andrea al Quirinale in Rome, a masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
